In February 2022, Emma’s Tongue Cancer Charity made the first donation of Holland Throat Scopes to the Western Primary Health Network for distribution to medical and allied health professionals in the Central West of NSW.
The throat scopes are attached to a mobile phone such as an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy and allow medicals and allied health professionals to utilise the phone’s high definition camera and larger screen to more accurately and clearly view the inside of a patient’s mouth than is achievable using a traditional laryngoscope.
As the device simply clips on to an existing phone, a doctor or dentist can then use the phone’s software to enlarge the photo, circle areas of interest, and obtain real-time feedback from specialists and other medical professionals, as they will be able to share the image easily using the phone’s own software.
Alexandra Butler made the donation on behalf of Emma’s Tongue Cancer Charity, and donated 40 scopes for distribution throughout the Central West of NSW. Alexandra passionately believes that early cancer detection is critical to saving lives, and the introduction of these scopes into the Central West has the potential to significantly increase early detection of pathology within the mouth and throat.
